MEET ALLAN & ELIZABETH

Allan moved to the eastern Sierra Nevadas in the late 70’s. He instantly fell in love with the majestic alpines of the Sierras. In the mid-90’s, adventure called and he moved to Fort Lauderdale to pursue a career in yachting. One of the yachts he worked on was named Themis. Longing for the mountains, Allan returned to California where he met his fellow farmer, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth

Elizabeth found herself in California in the mid-90’s. She was captivated by the diversity of the terrain.  Although not exactly the frozen wonderland of the Rocky Mountains, it reminded Elizabeth of her native Canada. She pursued her dream of attending law school and becoming a practicing attorney. Her calling was protecting the sacred constitutional rights of those who could not afford representation. Themis personifies fairness and the law.

AND THEN . . .

Elizabeth and Allan met at an historic restaurant located in the historic theatre building across from the courthouse where she worked.

They have been inseparable since that day, chasing adventure after adventure in search of their dream of returning to the mountains and running a farm.

After a visit to the organic wineries of Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California and small farms north of Puerto Nuevo, they reinvigorated their vision of owning their own small farm.

We chose the name “Themis Farms” because of our serendipitous meeting, but also because Themis is the Lady of divine order, natural law, and custom.

We approach our farm with this philosophy.

Our Farm

Really, we’re operating a small farm, but in our hearts, we are hobby farmers. Growing our own food, experimenting with new ideas, raising animals in a holistic manner — this is the life we love.

Through the years, we’ve been backyard farmers, growing lots of vegetables for our garden to table lifestyle.

We want to leave everyone with just one take-away:

If a yacht captain and a lawyer can become farmers, you can too. It can be a small 5-acre parcel like ours, your backyard, or as a hobby on any sized plot.

The only aspiration you need is a desire to grow your own food or raise animals for the joy of preserving heritage breeds.
